Movie Review! Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B

(Note: This is NOT Aaliyah. This is the actress Alexandra Shipp that played Aaliyah in the movie)

Okay this is my first ever review so just bare with me.

On November 15th was the premier of Lifetime's Biopic of Aaliyah. When I found out months ago about this movie I freaked out! I actually almost cried.

So a few days before the movie premiered I was on facebook and people kept posting how the movie wasn't going to be good because of the girl they chose the play her. I was reading some of them and I said to myself , "I should just watch the movie for myself and see what I think about it." I didn't get to watch the first  showing of the movie because I wasn't home, but I did watch it when it came on again at midnight but, before I saw it I saw more post saying that the movie sucked. I still didn't let that phase me, so I watched it.

Overall, to me, it wasn't that bad. It could of been better and here is why:

A lot of people had a problem with the actress they chose. At first Zendaya Coleman was chosen to play Aaliyah but, she dropped out of the movie because of reasons (I think it was because she didn't think the movie was going to be good or something like that) So Alexandra Shipp was chosen for the role. People were saying neither Zendaya or Alexandra looked like Aaliyah. First, it was the skin color. Aaliyah wasn't dark, but she wasn't light, she was some where in the middle, but you couldn't tell until you have comparison pictures.

Of course with different lighting and the camera flashes skin color does change a bit but my point is I see where everyone is coming from. For some weird reason if there is a movie going to be made about someone and they are some what light-skinned Hollywood always picks an actor that is lighter then the actually person. I don't know why it's like that, but I feel like there are some many factors that goes into picking someone for a role and we may never know all of the factors that went into it. So I understand why something like skin color wouldn't be as accurate as the public wanted it to be.
For the way the actors looked, I feel that they could of found someone that looked more like Aaliyah, but when they are put in the same clothing (well not the EXACT same) as Aaliyah they looked pretty good to me.

Another big reason why nobody really liked the movie was because they didn't reenact any of Aaliyah's music videos. That may not be an obvious reason, but if they did that the movie would get a lot more positive feedback. Just like Crazy, Sexy, Good: The TLC Story that premiered on VH1 staring Keke Palmer and Lil Mama reenacted some of TLC's music videos.The reason they didn't do it was because Aaliyah's parents didn't want to give them the rights to use her music, so they couldn't even use her songs which meant Alexandra had to sing the songs herself and she did a beautiful job. She didn't sound like Aaliyah but she sounded amazing! To be honest, I was hoping that they were going to reenact one of her music videos, but they were able to reenact her live performances which I've never seen before. (Note: I was 4 years old when she died)

People felt like there wasn't a 90's feel to it and honestly, I didn't feel it either. Even the other characters that played R. Kelly, Missy Elliot, and Timberland didn't even look like the actual people. (I'm not going to look for the pics of them because I don't care) At the same time I wasn't paying attention to the atmosphere of the movie, but if I don't get that feeling from the movie without having to look for it then it wasn't there.

I feel like that the movie mistakenly portrayed Aaliyah. Of course, I don't know what her life was like, hence the reason for this movie, but I think they made her seem like she was just a workaholic. Now, of course, I could be wrong and she probably was a workaholic, but I feel like she was more playful in her life. I do understand why it was like that though. She died young, so there wasn't too much of her life that was exposed to the public. If it was someone that has been in the entertainment industry for many many years then they would be able to get into more detail and be more accurate with the movie. I also feel like the movie was told through the eyes of other people and their memories which makes sense. Of course, in every scene there was someone there that had that memory with Aaliyah. I don't know if they sat down with the people that was with Aaliyah through her lifetime (lol get it) but I like to think that they did. So if they did then whatever scenes that was Aaliyah and her mom it was told through her mom. If it was her and her dad it was told through her dad. If it was her and R.Kelly then it was told through R.Kelly.

I wonder how R.Kelly felt when he found out that she died. Like how she felt when she found out that he got married. I wonder if he still loved her.

Overall, I feel like that they did the best that they could with everything that was going on. If you haven't seen the movie yet and you would like to see it and have your opinion then here are the times:

On Lifetime

In January there is going to be a Biopic of Whitney Houston. I think that a lot of people aren't going to watch it because of this movie and to be honest, I don't think it will be good but I'll watch it and do a post like I did this one.

My reason for a Hair Journey

That video is mostly a venting video but, also a video for anyone who is dealing with somewhat of the same problem as me. Kind of off topic here but I film my videos on my phone and usually I could see how much time I have left to make video. Well, this time my  phone didn't show me how much time I had left so I just kind of didn't get to really explain everything and I didn't want the video to be too long. Let me just get into it.

Why are you doing this?

I am doing this hair journey because of course, like any other girl I want long, healthy hair. What I want to do first, which is really weird, I want my hair to grow long first and then I want to cut it. I know that's not really the way to go but, that's something I want to do personally. I know people will tell me that if i don't cut my hair the split ends will just keep crawling up my hair shaft. To be honest, I don't care. I know I have split ends but, they are not bad and I trim my hair every once and a while.


I've done research about hair journey's and in my opinion I started late lol. A lot of girls on Youtube and they started since like 2008 or a few more years before that. I really don't remember what I REALLY wanted to say in this post but I guess i'll explain what my hair care routine is.

I co-wash (washing your hair with conditioner) my hair at least 2x a week or whenever I really need to.
I shampoo my hair 1x a week
I deep condition my hair 1x a week
I do a protein treatment 1x a month
I do the inversion method 1x a month

Ok you're probably wondering what the inversion method is. The inversion method is where you massage any oil of your choice onto your scalp and then carefully hang your head upside down for 4 minutes. If that's still really weird just look it up on Youtube because i'm tired of typing.

So got check out my video and i'm going to have two more videos up on both channels by the end of this weekend. Hopefully. Ill put the link of the videos once I have them up.

Jeff is a JERK!!!

I know I am NOT the only 18 year old that still watches Cartoon Network and enjoys the shows. For whom ever has never seen this character before this is Jeff from Clarence a cartoon show on Cartoon Network. The show is about this boy named Clarence and all of his adventures he has with his two best friends Sumo and Jeff and the rest of the neighborhood. I have no idea how old they are, all I know is that they all go to elementary school.

Jeff is one of those kids that THINKS that he is all grown up and that he is better than everybody or at least better than Clarence and Sumo. He likes to have things his own way and he is at the top of his class. No denying that this kid is smart and he likes to keep everything neat and clean but, his actions and words make him come across as a jerk!

When I first saw the preview there was a clip where Clarence put his hand on Jeff's shoulder and then Jeff said, "Touching!" well he almost screamed it out. I laughed because I thought it was funny. Then I actually started watching the show. 

My first hint that he is an jerk was in an (I don't remember the episode name or any of them) episode where Clarence made his own currency because the "Buddy Star System" in his class wasn't really pleasing to everyone because they felt that it was really difficult to earn at least one buddy star. Of course Jeff has the most buddy stars in the entire class. In one scene Jeff, Sumo and Clarence were walking down the hallway and everyone in the hallway was talking about how they could never get a buddy star and how it made them feel bad and one girl was asking her friend if she thinks that she has enough buddy stars to get into a good college (Wow! This opened my eyes on how the school system "rewards" kids and how it affects students but, that's another post for later). While all of this is going on Jeff is bragging about how many buddy stars he has. I was like um, ok, wtf but, whatever. 

The biggest hint that I saw was an episode where all the student took a test to see what class they were going to be put in, an advance class or an not so advance class. Jeff being Jeff was sure that he was going to be put in the advance class but, when he got his test back it said that he wasn't placed in the advanced class (Shit I was shocked!). He asked the teacher if they could talk outside of the room and then he accused the teacher in the nicest way possible that she made a mistake. She of course said no because the test was graded by a machine or something then she asked him, "I thought you wanted to be with your friends?" Sumo and Clarence didn't make it to the advanced class. Jeff then shouted, "No! I don't want to be with them! I want my life to be better than their's!" I was so mad when he said that! How could you say something like that to people that call you their best friend?!? 

Ever since then I've been seeing more acts like this from Jeff. I know you're probably thinking, "It's just a show. Why are you getting so worked up about it?" To me it shows how anyone can be a jerk no matter how young or old you are and there are some people in the world that will still love you.

All in all, I still really like this show because it's funny, light and Clarence is kind of stupid but it's all good lol!

Hey! What up!

Hey! If you're coming here from Youtube then you kind of know why I started my own blog but, if you're coming here from your own accord then let me explain what is happening here.

My name is Sara Miles and I wouldn't call myself a "Youtuber" because my definition of a Youtuber is someone that is pretty successful on Youtube. Of course i'm most probably wrong and i'm ok with that. I started my own blog because of a few reasons.

1. I had a blog before but it was me and a friend. Nothing bad happened it's just that we both became busy in our lives with different things and we didn't really have the time to work too much on it. I didn't want to take over the whole blog so we would take turns posting but, once again with both of us being busy we didn't have time. The blog is still up I just don't know what we're going to do with it.

2. This ties into my definition of a "Youtuber". I haven't been posting on Youtube for about a month and I didn't expect to be as busy as I became this month. To me, once again I could be wrong, a successful Youtuber is someone who post videos often to gain views and subscribers. I am lazy! Most of the time I want to make a video because I have a book with ideas but, I DO NOT want to set up everything! Like no hunntie! Any normal person would say it's better to make a video because typing everything takes more time. I like the fact that I can take my time and type because I spend forever of Facebook and I type my little heart out. So basically, if don't post a video on Youtube then there is a big chance that I will be posting something here.

So you're probably asking yourself, "Why is this blog called Starting Something Awesome with a mix?" If you didn't know I have two Youtube channels (Watch out! We got a baddie over here!) a beauty channel and a comedy channel. My friend and I used my beauty channel name on that blog that we started together and I was cool with it. So, i'm using my comedy channel name but, it's a mix because i'll be posting beauty stuff too. I'll try to have a healthy mix of both. So, like I said i'll most probably be on here because i'm lazy!
